Learn about John Quincy Adams ...
John Quincy Adams was an American statesman, diplomat, lawyer, and diarist who served as the sixth president of the United States from 1825 to 1829. He was the son of Founding Father and second U.S. President John Adams. A Federalist like his father, he served in several diplomatic posts prior to becoming president. As president, Adams pushed for federal funding of infrastructure projects and for stricter enforcement of laws against slavery. He also negotiated several important treaties, including the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the War of 1812. He also oversaw the successful enactment of the Adams–Onís Treaty, which added Florida to the United States. Despite his many accomplishments, Adams is often overshadowed by figures such as Andrew Jackson and Abraham Lincoln. Nevertheless, he remains an important figure in American history.
