Belgian writer Maurice Maeterlinck was born on August 29, 1862, in Gent, Belgium. After studying at the Athénée Royal de Gand, he worked as a journalist and drama critic. In 1890, he published his first collection of poems, Les Silhouettes. Two years later, he released his first play, Princesse Maleine. Maeterlinck went on to write a number of other successful plays, including Interior (1896), The Intruder (1900), and The Wisdom of Life (1903). He also wrote several books of prose, including The Unknown Guest (1914) and Our Destiny (1922). In 1911, Maeterlinck was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature "in appreciation of his many-sided literary activities, and especially of his dramatic works." He died on May 6, 1949, in Nice, France.
