Oscar Wilde was one of the most celebrated writers of the late 19th century. Born in Ireland in 1854, he moved to London in 1878 and quickly established himself as a leading lights of the city's literary scene. His plays, such as "The Importance of Being Earnest" and "Salome", were hugely popular, and his prose works, such as "The Picture of Dorian Gray", were also highly acclaimed. In 1895, Wilde was convicted of gross indecency and sentenced to two years in prison.
